Eiko Shimamiya – O

Eiko Shimamiya, O

I created the text file for this translation on October 17, 2008. I had one line translated as of December 20, 2009. Five of the verses were translated within the past two days. Total time: 590 days.

The song uses two foreign words that are included for aesthetic effect, “malaika” (meaning “angels”) and “gaia” (meaning “earth”). I have left these two untranslated below, as they are probably meant to stand out for their foreignness.

Now, they are being swallowed in. The twinkles of a millennium
Are closed by the blackout curtain of unstopping rain, and they will disappear before long.

I want to leave proof that I lived. I want the afterimage on the other side
Of the eyes that belong to you, the one I loved, to remain for eternity.

Before long, the waters will recede, and you will breathe once again.
I stand on the red-brown earth. Malaika, multiply in the ground.

Washed away over and over again, I carry the unending story once more.
The morning of the distant next millennium dawns.

I have let go, over and over again, of the end of sadness on this earth that grows quiet.
May the dreams bloom this time, and may they not disappear.

As though I may have known they would come, I will watch with these eyes of mine
The dying moments of the millennium until the end, without blinking once.

Everything is like a mirage, even you who I loved.
Even the sensation of your embrace cannot remain here.

The rustling of the trees, the voices of the birds, and everything else –
They form a song of the earth that I can’t hear now. Malaika, let them thrive.

The sinful ones with prideful passion were drowning in Gaia’s tears
The flame of the end begins, and it will disappear before long.

Washed away over and over again, I carry the unending story once more.
The morning of the distant next millennium dawns.

Story

Story
