Natsume Yuujinchou – Natsu Yuuzora

Atari Kousuke, Natsume Yuujinchou ED, Kizuna / Natsu Yuuzora

Cultural note: hoozuki is a plant (scientific name Physalis alkekengi) named for its fruit’s resemblance to paper lanterns, and it is traditionally offered during the Bon Festival to guide the souls of the deceased. While the internet turned up some existing English names, I didn’t find any that were particularly unambiguous or fitting for the flow of the song, so I went ahead and made up my own localized name, lantern fruit.

Five years since the first season of Natsume aired, this remains one of the anime songs that amazes me most for its ability to make me simultaneously emotional and peaceful.

Summer Evening Sky
Lyrics & Composition by Ezaki Toshiko
Sound produced & Arranged by Haketa Takefumi
Vocals by Atari Kousuke

Through the color-changing western sky
Pierces a single beam of sunlight.
Here, after the evening rain,
I notice the scent of summer.

The concentrated light shines down.
If I listen closely for thoughts and emotions,
I can hear traces of my friends.

The summer evening sky releases a scent
Of fresh and vibrant days that have passed by.
When we laughed together from the bottoms of our hearts…
Memories of that summer.

Color-changing lantern fruits,
At the lively summer festival.
With the echoing sound of bells in the wind,
Something shakes in the depths of my chest.

The cicadas cry, their sound filling the air.
When I walk alone through the grove of trees,
I feel the traces of days coming back to life.

Softly, they whispered,
Close to my ear,
Of nostalgic days.
Never changing from how they were then,
They remain here and now, within this soul of mine.

The things that we, as humans, protect…
The things that we, as humans, ponder…
Words woven by my late grandfather,
Precious words, lie within my heart.

The summer evening sky releases a scent
Of fresh and vibrant days that have passed by.
Unchanged from how it was then,
The warmth penetrates everything.

Memories of that summer…
