Hajime Chitose – Kotonoha

Hajime Chitose, Kotonoha

I discovered this song from a music textbook for one of my classes at school. It’s a bit older than much of what I listen to, but I found the style quite interesting.

The introduction of the song includes vocals in the Amami language (more specifically, its musical tradition of shimauta). The particular line included in the transcribed lyrics comes from a traditional song of celebration (source here).

「May things always be as today…」

What color is
The sky of daybreak that you see?
Blue, clear, the color of a flower I haven’t seen.

What color is
The midsummer wind you don’t know?
The color of a sorrowful flower filled with heat.

I want my song to reach
The city to the north.
I want this one word to reach
Your heart.

Softly, my thoughts extend
To that lilac sky.

My song floats down
To the city to the north.
Someday, that word will float down
To your heart.

We are seeing the same dream.
The lilac sky.
The wind, red like the deigo tree.
