Sakamoto Maaya, Tamayura ~sotsugyou shashin~ Movie 1: Kizashi theme song

This is first time Sakamoto Maaya has done the composition for a story’s theme song herself. The stated goal of the song was to make the audience cry, and I don’t even need to see the movie to know that they’ve succeeded magnificently.

I turn the corner, I cross the bridge, I pass through the shrine.
When I climb up the hill and turn to look back, I can see the ocean, far away.
The scent of flowers in spring, the voices of cicadas in summer,
The maple trees in autumn, the stars in winter – we’ve walked with all of them.
On this road with no name, you were always there together with me.

Somebody once sang that there’s a meaning for every goodbye.
It’s something that I don’t yet understand.
Ah, from here, so that I can find out…

In any direction, over any distance, you can go there if it’s what you want, they say.
Worlds you’ve never seen before await you beyond this point, they say.
In ten years, in twenty years, I’ll look back on all this, and I wonder, how will I feel when I remember today?
A single long and thin shadow, and the scent of new leaves shining in the wind…

You don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else, you once said.
I’ll walk on with those words held tight.
Ah, it begins – our time is coming to a close.

Somebody once sang that there’s a meaning for every goodbye.
It’s something that I don’t yet understand.
Ah, from here, so that I can find out…

I’ve read somewhere that just staying close by isn’t all there is to love,
But that’s something that I don’t yet understand.
Ah, from here, so that I can find out…

  1. Thanks for the translation! I have watched the movie, and I can say that the impact was even greater.

Btw, I think you made a slight mistake: the song was used in the 3rd movie’s ED, not the 1st.
