Angel Beats! -1st beat- – Heartily Song

Lia, Angel Beats! -1st beat- OP

And here we are, five years later. While it’s hard to top 『My Soul,Your Beats!』 (this song even draws upon its lyrics), 『Heartily Song』 certainly has some energy of its own.

It’s really nice that we’ll be able to explore more of this world. The one-cour limit of the TV anime really held it back from delivering its full potential, so hopefully the new project can do it justice.

For me, personally, this was an interesting song to translate. It’s been a long while since I’ve worked with Jun Maeda’s lyrics, and the bulk of what I did do in the past was from the Angel Beats! TV anime. Looking back, I honestly feel like I attempted those songs before I was really ready for material of that scale and complexity, and that led to a number of mistakes and imperfections that I have yet to completely resolve. If there’s any of my past work that I’d like to revisit with the experience that I have now (and there is definitely a ton of it), it’s the Angel Beats! project. That said, I did learn a lot from that project and the continuous reflection that has followed it – most importantly, I started to get a feel for navigating through Maeda’s style. So, I choose to continue the project with these two songs – so that it will eventually be complete.

Heartily Song
Vocals: Lia
Lyrics / Composition: Maeda Jun

What kind of dream were you in?
I hope it was a happy one,
But I’m just a little worried.
Are you still around somewhere?
On the day when I’ll disappear,
I’ll be brave and take the step forward.

Little birds crying out –
That’s how the morning goes.
There’s still some lingering drowsiness.
Changing clothes in a hurry;
I need to put on my tie,
So that I can walk with my head held high.

Lia – Hanabi

Lia, Spica/Hanabi/Moon; collected in Lia COLLECTION ALBUM Vol. 2 “Crystal Voice”

Requested by keith.

Words and Music by Key (Jun Maeda)
Arranged by Yuu Hagiwara
Vocals by Lia

On that day, you pulled me by my hand and said to me,
“Let’s aim for the life on the other side of the wall.”
You put your arms around the shoulders of the me who was frail and seemed like I’d break,
And we walked anywhere inside the deep darkness.

The dream the two of us aimed for is far away.
The dream the two of us lost is also far away.

Angel Beats! – My Soul,Your Beats!

Lia, Angel Beats! OP; My Soul,Your Beats! / Brave Song

The Jun Maeda + ANANT-GARDE EYES + Lia (+ Aoi Tada) combination never fails to impress.

One of the things I love about Jun Maeda’s compositions is how well he does syncopation and irregular/shifting time signatures. In this song, he executes the former so well that it initially seemed like the latter to me.

EDIT 5/22/10

My Soul,Your Beats!
Vocals: Lia
Lyrics / Composition: Jun Maeda
Guitar: Hikarisyuyo

Again and again, I wake up. On those drowsy mornings,
I tighten the tie on my neck.
When I pass through the door of the classroom, I hold my head high just a little bit, and I can walk on through.
A wind blows through that everyday life.
I felt like I could hear it.
I felt like I could feel it
In this chest of mine that begins to tremble now.
I felt like it was coming already.
As hundreds of millions of stars disappeared,
I saw them off;
I waved goodbye;
“I’m glad,” I said.

Tsubasa wo Kudasai

“Tsubasa wo Kudasai” is a Japanese folk song, originally by the group Akai Tori in 1971. Since then, it has been covered many, many times, by such artists as Veil ∞ Lia & Aoi (coupled with Clannad’s Negai ga Kanau Basho) and the girls of K-ON! (coupled with Fuwa Fuwa Time).

This transcription’s verse arrangement is based on Clannad’s; the kanji use is based on K-ON!’s.

Please Give Me Wings
Lyrics: Yamagami Michio
Composition: Murai Kunihiko

In this vast sky, I want to spread my wings
And fly.

If my wish
Could be granted now, I’d want wings.
Please put on my back
White wings, like a bird’s.
