Fate/Grand Order – Kuuhaku

【Lyrics Translation】 Sakamoto Maaya, Fate/Grand Order Arcade theme song; c/w Gyakkou

Blank Space
Lyrics: Sakamoto Maaya
Composition / Arrangement: la la larks
Strings Arrangement: Ishitsuka Tooru / Eguchi Ryou

When I looked back, you were no longer in sight.
You won’t say anything to the end, I see, to touch upon the heart of the matter.

No one can fill in the blank space inside me.
I’m sure there are lights I will see ahead, but…

Fate/Grand Order – Gyakkou

【Lyrics Translation】 Sakamoto Maaya, Fate/Grand Order -Cosmos in the Lostbelt- opening theme

The title is officially romanized as “Gyakko”, but oh well.

Backlight
Lyrics: Sakamoto Maaya
Composition: Izawa Ichiyou
Arrangement: Izawa Ichiyou / Eguchi Ryou

I was melancholic, seeing the same ceiling there every time I woke up,
Telling me that this is reality – there is no exit from here.

How do I put this to an end? Both completion and destruction are stories that will never arrive.
If my destiny is already set in stone,
Then I won’t imagine the future I couldn’t choose – that’s what I vowed, but…

Fate/Grand Order – Eternity Blue

【Lyrics Translation】 Ayumi, Fate/Grand Order ending theme

There’s very little information publicly available about the vocalist, including how her name is actually pronounced. Unless there’s something I’m seriously overlooking (possible), I imagine the one way to find out more would be to attend one of FGO’s live events.

Eternity Blue
Vocals: Ayumi
Lyrics / Composition: sachi
Arrangement: Nagai Masamichi

I didn’t know how to shed tears, or how to laugh.
In the future that I searched for blindly, what would I wish for?

I’d thought that the sky was always the grey of ash.
You taught me the true color of this world.

Angel Beats! -1st beat- – Heartily Song

Lia, Angel Beats! -1st beat- OP

And here we are, five years later. While it’s hard to top 『My Soul,Your Beats!』 (this song even draws upon its lyrics), 『Heartily Song』 certainly has some energy of its own.

It’s really nice that we’ll be able to explore more of this world. The one-cour limit of the TV anime really held it back from delivering its full potential, so hopefully the new project can do it justice.

For me, personally, this was an interesting song to translate. It’s been a long while since I’ve worked with Jun Maeda’s lyrics, and the bulk of what I did do in the past was from the Angel Beats! TV anime. Looking back, I honestly feel like I attempted those songs before I was really ready for material of that scale and complexity, and that led to a number of mistakes and imperfections that I have yet to completely resolve. If there’s any of my past work that I’d like to revisit with the experience that I have now (and there is definitely a ton of it), it’s the Angel Beats! project. That said, I did learn a lot from that project and the continuous reflection that has followed it – most importantly, I started to get a feel for navigating through Maeda’s style. So, I choose to continue the project with these two songs – so that it will eventually be complete.

Heartily Song
Vocals: Lia
Lyrics / Composition: Maeda Jun
Arrangement: ANANT-GARDE EYES

What kind of dream were you in?
I hope it was a happy one,
But I’m just a little worried.
Are you still around somewhere?
On the day when I’ll disappear,
I’ll be brave and take the step forward.

Little birds crying out –
That’s how the morning goes.
There’s still some lingering drowsiness.
Changing clothes in a hurry;
I need to put on my tie,
So that I can walk with my head held high.

Angel Beats! -1st beat- – Subete no Owari no Hajimari

Suzuyu, Angel Beats! -1st beat- ED

I had a slightly more difficult time connecting to this song than I did with the OP; part of the reason might be the fact that I haven’t played through the game yet (no one has). As such, I’d advise against reading too deeply into the translation at this point – there are ambiguities in the lyrics that I don’t fully grasp yet, and because of the nature of the song (ending theme of an unreleased game, with lyrics by Jun Maeda at that), it’s hard for me to tie things together.

(For the interested, the main points I’m struggling with are:
-how to interpret the structure of the final lines of the first and last stanzas ([…] 悲しみと), and
-whether the first line of stanza 3 (歩くのは出来る […]) constitutes a POV shift.
Everything else is pretty much just issues with elegant wording, which may or may not be significant to meaning.)

The Beginning of the End of Everything
Vocals: Suzuyu
Lyrics: Maeda Jun
Composition: Takeshita Tomohiro
Arrangement: ANANT-GARDE EYES

Who was I with? I can’t see anymore.
I know, it was something that I needed to remember.
What was I doing, again, here in this world?
The beginning of the end of everything is already complete.
Let’s not hang our heads, so that we can move on forward with no regrets.

Fate/Grand Order (Sakamoto Maaya / la la larks) – Shikisai

【Lyrics Translation】 Sakamoto Maaya, Fate/Grand Order OP (First Order ED); Shiawase ni Tsuite Watashi ga Shitte iru Itsutsu no Houhou / Shikisai

This translation is part of the School Food Punishment lyrics project, under the la la larks branch.

Sound produced and performed by la la larks! It’s nice to hear another collaboration between Sakamoto and Eguchi, though it’s considerably different in tone from Buddy.

Colors
Lyrics: Sakamoto Maaya
Composition / Arrangement: la la larks
Strings Arrangement: Eguchi Ryou / Ishitsuka Tooru

When I’m alone, I can hear the words – “If it’s painful, feel free to stop” –
Deep, almost like a black hole; from a sweet voice, frightening and tempting.

I’ll try mimicking the words you so often speak, and say that it’s nothing.
It doesn’t matter if that’s a lie – if it gives me a motive to continue to stand…

Coconatsu / tilt-six – Mirai Prism

Coconatsu (produced by tilt-six), SOUND VOLTEX II -infinite infection- original song

This song is probably the main thing that got me interested in SOUND VOLTEX. The concept always seemed interesting, but after I discovered Mirai Prism from tilt-six’s twitter, seeing the gameplay for this particular song was what hooked me – too bad there don’t seem to be any machines in the States. So, when I got the chance to go to Japan, I naturally spent a good chunk of time just trying to clear this song on the hardest difficulty, which I finally managed on the last day of the trip.

Being preoccupied with the gameplay, I didn’t pay that much attention to the lyrics until I sat down and read the booklet, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy the picture they paint. It did turn out to be a little difficult for me to translate due to certain instances of sort-of-repetition in the choruses; as such, I might have introduced a few more of my own “packaging words” than usual to make it work. I’m decently satisfied with how it turned out, but as always, I’d like to emphasize how much beauty remains within the form of the original lyrics.

Also, full disclosure: two verses past the second English segment, there’s some ambiguity where I’m not entirely sure if I’ve interpreted it adequately. Part of this is determining quote boundaries and the subject of the sentence. For the other part, I’d like to draw attention to the uses of two types of ‘kawaru’ – it basically always involves change, but the 変わる used for ‘days’ is more about transformation, while the 代わる used for ‘you’ is more about switching / substitution.

This song is actually available on iTunes. I’m not sure if it can be bought from outside Japan, though, since I don’t use iTunes. (I actually bought the physical Coconatsu mini-album because I’m silly)

Future Prism
Vocal: Shinonome Natsuhi (CV: Hinami Yuri), Shinonome Cocona (CV: Ozawa Ari)
Lyrics, Music & Arrangement: tilt

A beginning story.
I sing this wish
To the stars. From this place,
I’ve watched the little worlds,
Unfolded them, collected them,
Searching for you countless times.

One wish.
I dance my hope
For you. In this place,
Look at the great big future;
Dream of it, walk through it.
Find your way
To where the light points.

Can you feel my voice and smile?
Don’t worry, shining ray is guiding your way.
You don’t care the wall of you.
cause you can find your way,
when the story ends.
