UPDATE 2019-03-18: I’ve noticed that the official youtube description has been edited with a link to their own English translation. Probably no harm in keeping my own TL up, I guess, but that’s a thing that exists. (Interestingly, they chose to translate ‘fuchi’ as ‘edge’, while I originally went with ‘deep’. According to my previous understanding, the ‘edge’ meaning is more commonly represented by a kanji character different from the one given, but at this point it’s probably safe to assume that the man himself knows what he meant; also I’m sure we know how much RADWIMPS likes double meanings and stuff.)

Eight years.

Comments from Yojiro Noda, translated from the video description:

I made a song again this year.
Its title is 「夜の淵」 (The Edge of Night).
Eight years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In those eight years, we’ve also had a number of other disasters and tragedies strike this country.
Last year saw more of them than in typical years, with earthquakes in Hokkaido and Kansai, and floods in western Japan.

On the night of the earthquake last year, I heard many voices, struggling with fear by sending text messages and stuff in the dark due to blackouts, waiting for morning to come. While I was feeling frustrated at how, as usual, there was nothing I could really do, I figured that at the very least, it would be nice if a lullaby could provide just a little bit of peace of mind, so I wrote this song. From there, I added lyrics, made the arrangement, and recorded it, and that’s the song we have today.

We become more aware of the happiness of normal life at times when we’ve lost freedom. We discover the irreplaceable happiness in having electricity, a warm room, a family you can expect to be there, baths, meals. It really makes you realize that we’re living our days for the sake of all those little things.

The Great East Japan Earthquake. Even now, there are people who are missing, and there are families waiting for their return. There are people who can’t return to where they came from. There are many people working to repair and decommission the nuclear power plant. The Olympics are a good thing, to be sure, but I kind of think, the one thing I’d hate is if it ends up becoming a celebration where we just put a lid over all these things and forget.

Eight years later, the generation that doesn’t know the disaster is growing. Unfortunately, I’m sure that no matter what, earthquakes and calamity will happen periodically. They will rob us of our daily lives. I wish from the bottom of my heart that when it happens, our country can feel sympathy, love each other, and become one.

Finally, for all the lives that were lost in the disaster, and for those who continue to suffer even now, a prayer.

The Edge of Night
RADWIMPS

On the quiet edge of night,
In the pitch-black sky, one light appears,
Then more and more, one after another
Those are lights from another time

In just a little while, morning will come,
Bringing almost overwhelming light
Until then, let’s light little candles
In our hearts with great care
Let’s join hands in our dreams and be asleep together

Those neighboring stars look so close to each other
Yet we are even closer together, breathing and living

Those beautiful constellations are intertwined and filled with destiny
Yet we are even closer together, with love for each other

We don’t know
The reason we were born,
But the one thing that’s sure
Is that we weren’t born to cry

That’s the one thing that’s sure

Those neighboring stars look so close to each other
Yet we are even closer together, breathing and living

Those beautiful constellations are intertwined and filled with destiny
Yet we are even closer together, with love for each other
Holding tightly, we join hands

夜の淵
RADWIMPS

  3. Hi, just wanted to thank you for translating these songs, I remember finding a few of them years ago and always wondered what the significance was of them not being from any album or anything. The video description translations give these songs so much more meaning!
